Re: James W. Ryan, M.D., D. Phil.
AHS class of 1953
Please accept the following brief biographical
sketch of our nominee for the
Amarillo High School Hall of Fame.
While at AHS, James participated in choir, Hi-Y,
slide rule club, and Allied Youth. He served on the
Student Council and was a member of the Ken Club,
serving as president of the Ken Club his senior
year. He was a member of the National Honor Society
and the National Athletic Honor Society. He was a
member of the track team and was selected by his
teammates to win the Amarillo Globe News Most
Valuable Sandie Trackman Award in his senior year of
1953.
In 1957, James received a BA in Government from
Dartmouth College. In 1961 James earned his M. D.
from Cornell University Medical College. After two
years of housestaff training at Montreal General
Hospital, McGill University, he began his national
service as a Lt. Commander, US Public Health
Service, at the National Institute of Mental Health.
From there he moved on to the University of Oxford,
where in 1967, he received a D. Phil. in
biochemistry. This was accomplished while James was
working as an Honorary Medical Officer to the Regius
Professor of Medicine.
In 1967, James went from Oxford to Rockefeller
University as an assistant professor. He became a
Howard Hughes Investigator and an associate
professor of medicine at the University of Miami
School of Medicine in 1968 and became a full
professor in 1979. In 1995, James became a professor
of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology at the Medical
College of Georgia, where he retired in 2000. The
following pages will better demonstrate the
accomplishments of James Ryan and the impact his
research has on our daily lives.
Thank you for giving our nominee your consideration.
