My e-mail address has changed since I last reported. It is really great to keep up with AHS classmates. I would like to hear more stories of growing-up days in Amarillo. I have really enjoyed those in the 50th Alumni publication. I intend to write up some myself one of these days.

The web site is a boon. Thank you. I live in suburban Chicago and have for many years. I owned a family construction company following my husbands death and built foundation forms for major buildings in Chicago. I sold the company in 1990 and returned to my career of educating low income women in the local Head Start. I continue to be involved in my community on many levels. I have traveled widely. Life is good and being raised in Amarillo and graduating from AHS have provided positive social values which have enabled me to live an intresting life. Carol

I just stumbled onto the roster. It's great to see those old names and the photos of the 50th reunion. Seriously, some of you people need a lot of work. Larra and I were celebrating our 50th anniversary the weekend of the reunion. Hope there is another one in the works soon. We are doing fairly well for a couple of old people with bad backs and hips. I retired from the editorship of the Baptist Standard nine years ago but still do an occasional story for them and am currently editor of the bi-monthly Cowboy Times, published by the Texas Fellowship of Cowboy Churches. It's fun. ! I still play some golf and Larra plays Canasta with a group of women. We are active members of First Baptist Church of Waxahachie, where we moved in 2003 from Duncanville. We have three daughters who live in the area. Our six grandchildren are almost all grown--three college graduates, another in cosmetology school and two in high school. We have a great granddaughter, who will be three on Nov. 2 and a great grandson on the way. For my 73rd birthday one of my daughters got me a Sandie baseball cap. I love it. Toby Druin

Dear Class of '53. I am a '72 Alumni of Algona High in Algona, Iowa. Our school song was set to the tune of "March of the Sandies", which I believe was originally written for your High School. I am seeking a marching band recording of the song. My own high school is not responding to my requests so if anyone from your class has a copy your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Diane Cayton

The building shown on the history page, http://www.ahs53.org/History.htm is, of course, not the building that burned. It is the AHS building built in 1910 and later known as Nixson Jr. High and even later as the Nixson Annex. This buiding was torn down in 1964-65 to make way for the new band room and gymnasium. The building that burned is pictured on my Web site, http://members.cox.net/cloates under Personal Items. This 400x355 pixel image, scanned from 1965's La Airosa, might be a good addition to the AHS history article. (It's the picture Denise Olso used to make the burned-building image in the history article on the AHS Website.) --Chuck Oates, AHS 1966

Here is something tried recently, and I strongly recommend it. If you find yourself in London within the near-future, get yourself over to The Halfway House, 24 Priests Bridge, Barnes, around 8:30 p.m. on a Wednesday night. Do that and you will have the opportunity to combine pleasure with pride. This little neighborhood pub has a fine semi-pro band and a singer that you know: our own Pat Starr. Pat calls this her ‘jazz gig’, but it is more than that – some Cole Porter and George Gershwin favorites are featured. The pub serves dinner, and if you are good with standard British fare, the food adds to the fun. I had a lamb shank, English peas and enough mash to ruin a low carb diet for several days. Booze is at standard prices. Pat’s long service in British theater (re?) shows in excellent stage presence, and she has an altogether pleasant and relaxing voice. And she very obviously enjoys what she is doing. If a complaint can be expressed, be warned that there is NO C & W in the program. Now, maybe Texas girl Pat knows that Hank Williams doesn’t work with a UK audience, but I wonder: Given all of the keen train spotters around, how could they not like lyrics such as ‘That big eight wheeler movin’ down the track means your true lovin’ baby ain’t comin’ back. I’m movin’ on I’ll soon be gone - - -‘ Worth a try? If not already tried? Keep your eyes on the clarinetist and the trumpet player. They both seem to be pretty sweet on Pat. I was told, but hardly noticed, that some fine looking coeds from a nearby school added to the eye candy scene. For journalistic purposes and no other, I will try to be more observant next time.

If you are not a member of the AHS Alumni Association, please make the effort to join. The cost is only $10 per year. Click on LINKS on this web site and go to the Alumni Association site for information. Our next reunion ( 2006 ) will be tied to the Association Reunion. So to keep up, you need to join and you will receive a quarterly news letter that is worth the $10.

My huge thanks to all involved in the reunion planning and execution. It was a great time. I'm sure all of us found there was just too little time to catch up with old friends and really get to visit. Each of the 50 year stories would be extremely interesting. The book pages are fine, but hardly capture all that has gone on in 50 years.

Let's keep the web page going as it provides such a personal touch.

Belatedly, I want to thank all of you hard working organizers for the fantastic reunion that you gave us. It couldn't have been any better! It was great to see so many "old" friends and share a few tales together. But there just wasn't enough time to get it done right. How 'bout a 51 yr. reunion?

The reunion was great! Thanks Bob, Lera, Lela, Mary Sue (couldn't resist), Gene. Shirley and all the rest who worked so hard to make it a success! In his remarks Bill called us "the luckiest generation". He was right. We were and are. I was amazed at the level of education and success so many of our classmates had attained--it speaks for the quality of the teachers who taught and inspired us and well for the quality of those who listened and put their lessons to life long use. I was also impressed by how kindly the years had treated so many--younger looking and more active than the number of birthdays we can't deny would indicate. The old building that housed our AHS may be gone but the Class of '53 has truly written it's name in books of fame. Thanks again for the memories--old and new!

In closing I would just like to say how wonderful and exciting to be included in your 50th reunion.

The Bio's were great! I saw a few older people in your book and a few that looked a little younger. The one of George Lackey caught my eye. It is so nice to see such a young looking person spend their last days working for the Salvation Army. Great uniform!

Congratulations to the committee of classmates who planned the 50th reunion of the class of '53! It was wonderful! We enjoyed the activities and loved seeing and visiting with Sandie friends. Our class was special and filled with achievers. Reading the bios in the yellow book was an eye opening experience. We have become educators, lawyers, realtors, airline pilots, media experts, entertainers, business owners, writers, scientists, doctors, dentists, nurses and much more. Add to that list--parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. Our class made a difference!

Ditto to D’Nard’s comments about the reunion. It was absolutely the BEST!! What a wonderful turn out. Each event was so special. How many came to the dinner/dance? Thank you Bob Damon, Lera Hudson Boyd, Dwayne McMinn, Gail Stephenson Notestine, Parker Beebe, Bill Mobley, Lloyd Dean Byars Gower, Patricia Reeder Latham, Wandalee Long Fontaine, Sue Hazelwood, Gene Cavender, Shirley Kline Gibbons, Mary Kay Bohn Sharp, Lela Hudson Moss, Grady Ann Donnell Jacobs and Darlene Wakefield for putting together such an outstanding reunion! And Ken Fairchild is still a masterful MC. It was terrific to have Coach Guess and recognize the track team at lunch Saturday. Dave and I are still a bit overwhelmed! It was such a delight to visit with so many dear friends. What a great class! What CLASS. We did not realize this was the “last” reunion of our class, but support the idea of an AHS 50th Alumni Association. Hope to see many of you in 2006. It is indeed a privilege to be a member of the AHS Class of ’53.

WOW! Organizers deserve kudos! What a time to browse. Thanks. I haven't had a 50-yr. marriage like some of you, but always impatient to hie life on, I actually graduated in '52, and had several early marriages. My best & longest lasted almost 30 yrs., to a great educator who passed away 9/96, & yielded a stepson whom I adopted, 2 grown stepdaughters, & a wonderful adopted father for my daughter Valli who is now an educator in Lubbock. She and British husband blessed us with a granddaughter, now 11 years old. After stints in Amarillo, El Paso, Clovis, Dayton, Spokane, Wellington, & Panhandle, I finally settled in Lubbock. While working full time & supporting Valli, I earned an MA from WT. Teaching Enlgish, Humanities, etc., in Amarillo, Panhandle, & Lubbock, I organized teachers and students for European travel during some 10 summers. Also, visited D.C., Baltimore, & Japan thru the University of Maryland studying Theater: East & West over 2 summers. Born to travel, I'm still crisscrossing the US and "the pond", preparing for 3rd trip to Branson this summer. Still happily single, I do have a dancing & traveling partner. To quote the Bard, this is "too long by half a mile," so hope to read more of YOUR bios on this website and look forward to renewing friendships.

What a fantastic epistle! You organizers deserve medals. What a tome to browse! Thanks. Don't have a 50-yr. anniversary as some of you, but, always impatient to live life fully, I graduated in '52. Had several early marriages; however, my longest and best, to an educator who passed away in '96, yielded a step-son whom I adopted, & 2 grown stepdaughters. He was a great adopted father for my daughter Valli who is now an educator in Lubbock. She blessed us with a gifted granddaughter, Chelsea, now 11 years old. Finally, after stints in Amarillo, El Paso, Spokane, Dayton, Clovis, Wellington, and Panhandle, I settled in Lubbock, retiring from LISD

What a Great Website! And what an amazing class! Achievements, awards, careers, and subtle humor. Many thanks to the Reunion Committee. They work their buns off creating this intense get-together. From the website, John Ed Ekelund and I connected with James Ryan, M.D. He's driving in from the Deep South. Great to make contact again. My life since AHS: studied tennis in California; snatched three degrees from UT-Austin; tried to learn Russian and Chinese at Georgetown-U in Washington, DC (no luck there); spent a summer muttering Hindustani at U-Chicago; taught English 1 yr at U-KY (Lexington) and 12 years at Beloit College (WI); wrote a bad novel in Mexico; taught tennis in California, where I met Margot, a Viking Princess; tagged along with Margot to Seattle, when she became Head of Personnel at the UW. Wrote a dozen books – mysteries, business how-tos, books on how-to-write a novel (see amazon.com) – and now, at 68, as the most ancient Sandie in the class of 1953, I have a! new agent (number 11) and a new two-book contract. To launch Y2K, I escaped the jaws of prostate cancer. That reedy, cracked voice on the soundtrack of Oh!AHS as performed on the website is mine. All the other voices are bright angels singing. Nice to see a web page. So much has happened and I have been graced with a good life and a great wife, La Rue, that puts up with me. After school, I deferred from college and went straight into the U.S.Marine Corps. Spent a year in Korea. I have traveled for the majority of my life, in an assortment of jobs. In January of this year, La Rue and I sold our business and now I'm doing part time stuff. We have had 6 kids. Lost a son in 1988 to a serious illness. Have 12 Grand kids scattered all over the world. One great grand son.

We have traveled to several countries. That happens when you have a kid in the Foreign Service with the Dept. of State. We have been to Tahaiti, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Yemen. Canada, and I'm sure I missed some. Last but not least, we just did a revisit of South Korea in Sept. 2002. I play golf about once a week and goof off quite q bit. I will be looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.

I am from the Class of '54 and love both our web sites. I am looking for a picture of the old "Double Dip" across from the old AHS and also a picture of Stanley's Drive Inn. I have searched the net, talked to the Amarillo Public Library and the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce but can not find anything. Surely someone in the Class of '53 or '54 must have a picture of these places. As much time as I spent there can not imagine me not having a picture of them--but I don't. If you have a picture please email me. Thanks Barbara

I have lived in Denton for past 2 years. My 3 grandchildren, daughter and son are here also. Was married for 24 years to Newton Butler. He was in the Air Force and later with the Dept of Army. We moved a lot! He passed away in '85. I lived and worked in California for past 15 years, prior to coming back to Texas. Am looking forward to the reunion, the first one I've lived near enough to attend.

Still, the Class of '53 continues to have class as evidenced by this website and the great (and successful) past and upcoming reunions. Kudos to the people who have worked their hearts out for us Sandies. I am living a great life; football and chemical engineering. at Oklahoma State; married Martha (now 45 years); 3 boys,1 girl, 7 1/2 grandkids. I became attorney…-practiced 24 years; started small food mfg. business. Illness forced retirement. However, still looking for something to do when i grow up.

This website is great! What fun reading about everyone. Since high school, I've lived in Arizona, Colorado, Ohio, and New Mexico, and I'm back in Texas (after retirement from Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque) living two blocks away from my daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren. My son and daughter-in-law live in Nashville. After 20 years of marriage, I've been single now longer than that! All of my family are very musical (imagine that!) and life couldn't be better. I stay busy singing in the Church Choir, enjoying my family, and working part-time for Tarrant County College and AISD. See you at the reunion!

22 Jun 2003

As of June 21st we have 154 Classmates who have signed up for the reunion and with spouses the total is 250. We have 70 going to TEXAS, 98 going to the BIG TEXAN and 76 going to the COWBOY BREAKFAST. These are teriffic numbers and they are growing daily. If you want to attend any of the special events it is not to late to sign up. We will cut these off around July 1st. It will not be too late to sign up to attend the reunion until the reunion is over. You can come at the last minute. However, we need the Bio Sheets ASAP. The bio sheets are the guts of our Reunion Classbook . There is a deadline on the Reunion Classbook that was set at June 15th. We have extended that date to July 1st because it is terribly important that no one is left out and that everyone has given us a picture. So please please please get this done NOW. If you do not have forms, click on 50th Reunion on this web site and you will find all the forms to print and mail. Also, you can email Lera Boyd and she! will sign you up. Remember-------- it is not to late. Like the great Yoggi said " it aint over until it's over.

Hello Classmates:

We are not going to be able to attend the reunion after all as we have a long trip planned. We could not reschedule again as there are other people, hotel, plane, boat reservations, etc. involved. We were really looking forward to it. I will enjoy reading in our "50th" yearbook about each of you.

I want to express my appreciation to all involved in this web page and for the 50th reunion. May God bless you all and keep you safe as you travel to and from the reunion.

Like other classmates I have lived my life in four periods of time (although I almost died in '52, my junior year, traveling too fast on a late-night drive home from Lubbock). The first 20+ years were of course devoted to education, the second 20 years were spent as a college professor, the third 20 years were spent in private business with my wife, Leticia (Class of '55), and the last 20+ years I am going to spend working on the rennovation and redeployment of the Herring Hotel building in Amarillo (a building I have owned for many years). Perhaps there are classmates who will retire in Amarillo who would like living in the "Herring At Cvic Center". I sure look forward to renewing acquaintences with classmates at our 50th class reunion. Fond regards to all who may attend, and also to those who simply cannot attend. Perhaps there will be other occasions for meeting and visiting in the event we miss each other during our 50th reunion gathering. May the Grace! of Almighty God, and Peace in the part of the world where you now reside, be your comfort and assurance. Sincerely, Robert W. Goodrich

"Great Job" to all those that have made the reunion happen and the web page too. Found myself on the "Lost 'Mates" page. Hope you can dig me out.

Six years as Army pilot, four years spraying bananas in Republic of Honduras with a helicopter, 19 years as pilot/experimental test pilot for Bell Helicopter, 10 years a Program Manager of Research & Development at Bell Hcptr., retired in 1996, Wife Jerri died in "97" and I moved to Rio Grande Valley, married a wonderful widow (yankee blood though). We do the normal things that retirees do - travel, eat, love the mountains, eating, hiking, eating, faceting precious gems, eating, and have added geocaching and dieting. See you soon.

Thanks to Parker Beebe that alerted me to the reunion.

(Phone No. 972-279-3065) Ditto on the marvelous Website!! Hats off to it's creator. Have lived in Mesquite, TX, since 1963. Been happily married to Sally Cox of Lockney, TX, for 44 years. Two children. Three grandchildren. Spend much of my time watching the grandkids perform in sports and in a local neo-acoustic rock jazz band: "Dressed For Autumn". Served 3 years in the US Army working with Nike Hercules anti-aircraft missiles (1955-1958). Following completion of a BSEE at Texas Tech U in 1967, I worked as a design engineer for several companies (Texas Instruments, Collins Radio, LTV Electro-Systems, etc.) in the defense industry before switching to the field of Industrial Automation in 1979 while at TI. I retired recently (May 2002) from Siemens Energy & Automation in Dallas after 23 years in Automation Sales in N. Texas.

A great mystery for me has finally been solved by this guestbook record: What ever happened to Charles S. Brown, one of my old 'runnin' buddies?? Maj. (or Col.?) Brown had disappeared from my radar screen shortly after one of his Viet Nam tours. It's good to know he is still kickin.

May God bless each and every one of you. Hope to get reacquainted in August, the "Lord willing and the Saints don't rise".

After many years in Austin, Tom and I will be moving to Australia to be near our son Kent, his wife Helen, and his two young daughters. I retire from UT Austin at the end of July after a satisfying career of 38 years as a librarian and library administrator at the Harry Ransom Center (see hrc.utexas.edu). We've loved Austin but it seems to get hotter every year and the traffic heavier. Our other son Brett lives here as does his son Andy, now 14, and not terribly interested in doing things with his grandparents. Will be at my first AHS reunion this year and hope I can put names and faces together. All best to all. Sparksie

Can't believe we made it to the 50th! (Though since it's still a couple of months away, I should knock on wood.) In thinking about some departed classmates, I suddenly started grieving again for the REAL A.H.S. I guess it's silly to miss an old building, but I loved that old building. When people occasionally ask which H.S. I went to , I say with a hint of superiority: "The Original", and unless they've just landed in the Panhandle from a distant planet, they know what I mean. Look forward to seeing everyone.

We moved to the Piney Woods of East Texas in 1985 and love living in all the trees and on a lake. Marion does all the fishing. Couldn't think of any new superlatives to describe this great web-site. I propose we devote some real recognition to its creators at the reunion.

To those who believe they won't be able to attend...please reconsider. Joan and I returned this morning from a warmer-upper at Ilah Coffees's home last night in Dallas. It was rewarding beyond imagination. Our reunion will be the same.

So..."God willin' and the creek don't rise" we're going to be there. Think about it for yourself. As we all realize, time's starting to close in on us. Let's make the most of it.

In books of fame we will write your name! I never dreamed that I would be a writer, and never would it be in math books. Yet as a managing editor of a national publishing company some of the nations leading school math texts were brought out under my direction. No doubt, some of your children studied from them. Now after moving to academia i have become an author. Your grandchildren may well study out of my latest middle/high school math text. married 42 years-Sherry Tomasello AHS -59 3 children with degrees from Ohio State, Southern Cal, Arizona, North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Northwestern

With all the information about the Columbia tragedy, some of the extended families may have been forgotten. One of those families is one of ours: Ben Neely was an uncle of Rick Husband. Some of you may have known Rick's wife, Evelyn Neely or Rick's brother, Dan. Of course our thoughts are with each of the family members.

My thanks to Bob Damon for telling me about this wonderful sight. The group picture from the last reunion is great. All the girls are still very pretty, but who are all those old men? Seeing the pictures and reading about your activities and accomplishments brings back wonderful memories. My wife, Dorothy, and I have been married 30 years. I have two sons and she has two sons, and we have 8 grand children between us. Four of our grand children were born in 2000. I'm retired from AT&T and spend a lot of time baby sitting with four of our grand children who live in Dallas. We average eight trips a year to Long Island, NY and Winston-Salem, NC to visit the other four grand children. I would show you their pictures, but I can't get this thing to accept them. The identical two year old boys are especially cute. Look just like me. Hope to see you at the reunion.

So much fun reading about everyone on this website! BF and I will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary August 12th. We have a wonderful family - a son and a daughter and 5 grandchildren - ages 13 to 20, all live here in Amarillo. BF and I retired from our family business, Texas Bearing Company, but he went back to work selling for the kids. We still love to travel and do a lot of RVing, boating, fishing and WATCHING the younger family members do the more energetic sports we USED TO DO!

See all of you, we hope, at our 50th Reunion

I have been guilty of looking at others my own age and thinking...surely I cannot look that old......I'm sure you've done the same......You may enjoy this short story....

While waiting for my first appointment in the reception room of a new dentist, I noticed his certificate, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered that a tall, handsome boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40 years ago.

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, grey-haired man with the deeply lined face was too old to have been my classmate.

After he had examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended the local high school.

"Yes," he replied.

"When did you graduate?" I asked.

He answered, "In 1953."

"Why, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely and then asked, "What did you teach?"

Great to see this. Who is the master of communications and 50 years ago who would have believed.

I retired from Merrill Lynch after 42 years working in the Amarillo office. My wonderful wife Sandie kept pushing hard and I had a great career. I now spend time in my office in the Herring Bank Bldg. in Wolflin Village. Best thing I am doing is serving on the Boy's Ranch Board, Amarillo College Foundation, BSA Foundation and a couple of other boards.

Biggest news is that my daughter made Sandie and I the proud grandparents of TRIPLETS. She also has a 4 year old daughter. Her husband is an engineer working on the Dart system and the live in Dallas. My son lives in Huntington Beach, CA, is married and she has a son and daughter.
